Populair sights along the canals

Let's put a spotlight on some of the highlights you cruise past our Amsterdam canal cruise:

Canal houses

The canal houses built along the canals are a classic example of how the Golden Age left its mark on the city. The Dutch Golden age specifies the time in history (17th Century) when Amsterdam experienced great economic prosperity. The lower part of the building was used for living and the upper part to store merchandise that came in through the canals.

Westerkerk - the highest church tower in Amsterdam

The tower from the Westerkerk is, with its height of 87 meters/285 feet, the highest church tower of the city. A lot of great Dutchmen with huge historical value are burried in the Westerkerk. From painters like Rembrandt van Rijn to Samuel Blommaert who was a merchant in the Golden Age. But the Westerkerk wasn't just used for burials. The former queen of the Netherlands, Beatrix, married her husband Claus von Amsberg in this church.

Anne Frank House

This monument for Anne Frank at Prinsengracht must be the most famous building in the city. From the 6th of July 1942 until the start of August 1944 she and her jewish family hid for the German war regime during the Second World War. The reason we know about the story of Anne Frank is because she kept a diary that was saved after someone betrayed the family and they all were arrested. Her diary is one of the most read books in the world and as from 2009 you can find this title (The Secret Annex) on the UNESCO World Heritage list for Monument
