Begin to comprehend and fully respect the destructive power of ferocious war when you visit the Somme Battlefields, site of horrific suffering for all involved. The scars of the Great War are still visible in this trip through the most significant sites of the Somme battlefields.
The still remaining trenches and mine craters shock and sadden visitors, and the obliterated vegetation and villages razed to the ground are a poignant reminder of the sorrow of war. Follow your driver guide and discover the area which was home to one of the most terrible battles of the Great War, in which an estimated one million plus men were wounded or killed.
Plunge into the history of the 1916 Battle of the Somme by visiting the Historial Museum in Péronne, which as two major permanent exhibits: the Prisoners of War exhibit, which informs on the conditions of the 6.6 million displaced and detained, and the Children of World War I exhibit, who were used politically by both sides in the war.
The tour takes you to the villages of Villers-Bretonneux and Péronne as well as La Boisselle. These are all places where the Australian, British and Canadian troops earned renown and all of the villages bear witness to our unwillingness to forget the past, and the importance of learning from previous mistakes and grievances. Intersperse this informative historical trip with a local lunch at Péronne in a tasty, typical restaurant as you discuss all that you have learnt.
