Step back in time with this full day tour of the beautiful Loire valley and some of its most impressive chateaux. See rolling countryside, fairytale castles and stop for lunch at a charming centuries-old inn.

Having been picked up from your central Paris accommodation early in the day you will head off in the company of your driver-guide to the Loire Valley with its delightful landscape studded with vineyards, orchards and ancient chateaux. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Garden of France’, this lovely region has been declared a Unesco World Heritage site. Visit turreted Chambord Castle, the largest of the Loire castles, with its unique ‘double helix’ staircase thought to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Wander in the surrounding deer park, the largest wooded park in Europe, enclosed by a 31 kilometre-long wall.

Then head to Chateau Amboise, a one-time royal residence and final resting place for Leonardo da Vinci, buried in the adjoining chapel. An armoured tank, built to one of the great man’s designs, may be found in the castle grounds. At Chenonceau, admire the wealth of decoration, both inside and out, that makes this splendid edifice the most popular chateau in France. You will have lunch at Au Gateau Breton.

The restaurant, which offers a fixed menu, is housed in a two centuries-old Breton-type inn, a short walk from the château. A real treat is in store for all lovers of French history and culture with this day-long tour of the delightful Loire valley.
